Gunners Prevail, 3-1, Over Philadelphia
|
The Newark Gunners beat the Philadelphia Haymakers, 3-1, at The Armory. Starting pitcher Rafael Otero was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. Otero, now 5-2, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 1, walking 0, and allowing 1 run. Rodger Lawson converted his 1st save in 2 tries.
Marvin McGrady's at-bat in the bottom of the sixth was significant for the Gunners. Coming to the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd and Newark trailing 1-0, the Gunners first baseman hit a run-scoring double.
"Tough loss," said Philadelphia manager Jon Lyons. "But we'll learn from it."
The win elevated the Gunners to 32-23.
