A celebratory mood filled the air as the Monterrey Swordsmen closed out the season with a 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Firebirds at Firebirds Ballpark to capture the Sunset Trophy, 5-4.

Giving the Firebirds credit for a hard-fought series, Swordsmen players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned Independent Desert Baseball champions.

"We felt like this was our year all season long," said left fielder Valentín Franco, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did."

It was the 2nd in franchise history. During the regular season Monterrey put up a 48-32 record and finished second.

"They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected Phoenix manager Tom Broom. "We played good ball, they just played better than us."
